What makes a day in the life of an online student stand out at Virtual Preparatory Academy of Indiana @ Madison-Grant? Unlike many district virtual options that adapt a traditional model to an online setting, Virtual Preparatory Academy of Indiana @ Madison-Grant was built from the ground up specifically for online education. That design shows up directly in the school day: multiple small-group live sessions with specialized teachers, a proven virtual curriculum, and personalized support built into every afternoon. Here is what that day looks like for an Indiana family.

Starting the Morning Routine

The school day at Virtual Preparatory Academy of Indiana @ Madison-Grant begins at 8:00 AM with a prep period, giving students time to work on electives, complete any outstanding assignments, and check inbox messages and announcements before Homeroom starts at 9:00 AM. This structured prep window helps younger students get organized and ready before the first live session of the day.

A daily Homeroom session then brings the class together with their teacher before the first small-group block begins, establishing a consistent social and academic starting point every morning. Since 2021, that daily Homeroom rhythm has been a foundational part of how Virtual Preparatory Academy of Indiana @ Madison-Grant starts its school day.

Attending Live Online Classes

Live instruction at Virtual Preparatory Academy of Indiana @ Madison-Grant is built around recurring small-group sessions throughout the day rather than a single large class. Unlike a traditional model where students attend one whole-class session, the school's curriculum was designed from the ground up for online delivery, which means teachers work with students in small groups across multiple sessions each morning and afternoon.

Morning Lessons

Morning small-group sessions cover core academic subjects with a level of direct teacher interaction that a single whole-class session cannot match. Schedules vary by grade level and subject, and kindergarten through sixth grade students benefit from four scheduled small-group intervention and enrichment sessions per week in addition to their regular daily instruction.

Interactive Activities

Because small-group instruction is the primary format, every live session is inherently interactive. Students are in a focused group with their teacher, working through material together rather than waiting to be called on in a large class. All sessions are recorded, so students can revisit any session they need to review.

Independent Learning Time

Asynchronous work blocks are scheduled between small-group sessions, giving students time to complete independent practice and assignments with Learning Coach support at home. Students in kindergarten through third grade also use physical workbooks alongside their online coursework. Schedules vary by grade level and subject, with independent time shifting as students move through the elementary grades.

Breaks, Play, and Physical Activity

A lunch and movement break is built into the midday schedule. This window gives younger students room to eat, move, and come back to the afternoon small-group session ready to focus. Learning Coaches can use this time for outdoor play or physical activity before the afternoon block begins.

Teacher Support and Check-Ins

Because Virtual Preparatory Academy of Indiana @ Madison-Grant was built from the ground up for online education, teacher support is woven into the structure of the school day rather than something students have to seek out. Small-group sessions provide consistent direct teacher contact throughout the day, and open work time at the end of the school day gives students an opportunity for office hours or private meetings with their teacher. Families can find the school calendar and additional resources on the Virtual Preparatory Academy of Indiana @ Madison-Grant parent and student resources page.

The school's highly trained teachers and staff bring years of experience specifically in the online school setting, a distinction that shows up in how smoothly the small-group model runs from day one of the school year.

Social Opportunities and Clubs

Students at Virtual Preparatory Academy of Indiana @ Madison-Grant connect with classmates through daily Homeroom, recurring small-group sessions, and extracurricular activities throughout the school year. The daily Homeroom and multiple small-group touchpoints give elementary students more frequent peer interaction than a single whole-class session per day would allow.
